High Grade Palace of Westminster Encaustic Tile (White Hart)

£200.00
Bestseller

Description

Designed by Palace architect A.W.N. Pugin and originally cast by Mintons of Stoke on Trent, the encaustic floor tiles that can be found throughout the Palace of Westminster have borne witness to some of the most important moments in the history of the United Kingdom – and have been walked upon by some of its most renowned politicians.

Removed as part of a nine-year conservation and restoration project, our high grade tiles are some of the finest examples of Pugin's neo-gothic designs and Minton's workmanship. They show few signs of wear and retain an excellent colour.

This tile depicts the white hart of Richard II, King of England from 1377 to 1399. Pugin used the cognisance of this particular Plantagenet king in many decorative details for the new Palace of Westminster because Richard had such a great influence on the architecture of the original medieval palace. The hart can still be seen in the cornice stone carvings of Westminster Hall alongside the feathered helm of the king.

Each tile comes presented in a branded, satin-lined gift box with a certificate of authenticity that gives information about the encaustic tiles restoration project and and the location within the Palace from which the tile was removed.

  • 15.5cm x 15.5cm
  • Box size 21cm x 21cm
  • High-grade tiles are the best preserved from the project

Please note: The design pictured is the design you will receive, but as each tile is unique, your tile may vary slightly in appearance to that which is shown.
